I was invited to paint with Steve Puttrich’s plein air class at the Morton Arboretum this week. I had a great time! Steve gave very clear instruction at the start of the class, along with several demos. I had a hard time choosing a spot, but ended up focusing on a shady corner of the Thornhill Education Center building. I enjoyed painting with this group – fellow wordpress artist Maggie Cappettini was also there. 🙂

I went back to the same spot by the lake and painted the sunrise again this morning. The paint acts a lot differently when I apply thicker strokes. I like some of the results.

I had a great time at the Prairie Arts Festival last weekend. I connected with a lot of wonderful people, old and new friends. Thanks to all of you who stopped by my booth! The weather couldn’t have been nicer. My spot was on a beautiful lake, with swans nesting in the distance.

I was excited and honored to win the second place award (my red ribbon matched my sunburn – I brought sunblock on the second day).

I’m loving this online plein air class from Roos Schuring. These paintings are the sunrises and sunsets I’ve done so far. More updates coming soon!

I had a great time at the Prairie Plein Air reception last night! Thanks to the hosts and sponsors for putting this very cool event together. “Spring Valley Meadow” took first place in an impressive and beautiful group of paintings. So much fun meeting the artists and organizers, and recognizing little spots around Schaumburg in the work. Check it out if you can! The show will be on display during the Prairie Arts Festival this weekend, and will remain for the month of June.

Plein air: Kim’s Chop Suey

The day after making the Grove Pond painting I spend a fine hour or two on this street scene, looking north across Glenview Road near the Glenview Grind, where I got lunch afterwards. Rain was forecast, but it held off until I packed up. Right to left, this is Kim’s Chop Suey, Van’s Nails and a bit of Twisted Tree Consignment. I was trying to remember some of what I’ve learned from James Gurney’s excellent and entertaining book and blog.

Keep in mind, I’ll be at the Prairie Arts Festival on May 27 and 28 from 10 to 5 each day.

A beautiful, sunny afternoon spent in the Grove, looking west. I’m getting ready for the Prairie Arts Festival next weekend (May 27 and 28)!
