Sunrise, Plein Air

Thick paint, scooped on like frosting! I’m having a lot of fun with this. It’s challenging, and less predictable. When I touch a spot with a brush it might spread out, blend, lift up, or reveal some color I forgot was underneath. Lots of scrapping areas off and trying again. Below are a couple more cloud studies, a small one I did from a photo and an afternoon plein air landscape (nearly the same spot as the one above).

I was invited to paint with Steve Puttrich’s plein air class at the Morton Arboretum this week. I had a great time! Steve gave very clear instruction at the start of the class, along with several demos. I had a hard time choosing a spot, but ended up focusing on a shady corner of the Thornhill Education Center building. I enjoyed painting with this group – fellow wordpress artist Maggie Cappettini was also there. 🙂

I went back to the same spot by the lake and painted the sunrise again this morning. The paint acts a lot differently when I apply thicker strokes. I like some of the results.

I had a great time at the Prairie Arts Festival last weekend. I connected with a lot of wonderful people, old and new friends. Thanks to all of you who stopped by my booth! The weather couldn’t have been nicer. My spot was on a beautiful lake, with swans nesting in the distance.

I was excited and honored to win the second place award (my red ribbon matched my sunburn – I brought sunblock on the second day).

I’m loving this online plein air class from Roos Schuring. These paintings are the sunrises and sunsets I’ve done so far. More updates coming soon!

Crossing my fingers that the varnish on this dries in time for the Prairie Arts Festival this weekend. These bluebells were a gift from a friend and fellow gardener.

Here are two paintings of pears on a white plate. Cool and warm shadows and reflections. I’m looking forward to the reception for the Prairie Plein Air Event in Schaumburg tonight!

This was my entry for the Historic Wagner Farm Dairy Breakfast Poster Contest. The painting has been purchased by the farm, and I’ll be delivering it to its new home soon.

I just started a four week online class with the amazing painter Roos Schuring. This week’s assignment is to get out and paint sunrises and sunsets. Of course now it’s raining here. I did get out last night, and I hope to go again Thursday morning.

I’ve been posting in-progress photos on instagram at debrhapainting, and I’ll be updating my etsy shop in the next few days (debrha).
