Horsetail – I think that’s what this striped grass is called. I’ve seen it growing on dunes and riverbanks in Illinois and Michigan. I had a lot of fun making different textures and types of marks in this painting, thin and thick paint, layering and glazing, and then at the end trying to get the different areas working together.
According to Wikipedia:
Equisetum is a “living fossil” as it is the only living genus of the entire class Equisetopsida, a family of vascular plants that reproduce by spores rather than seeds, and which for over one hundred million years was much more diverse and dominated the understory of late Paleozoic forests.
