Oil Painting: Red D’Anjou Pears

I had a dark gray drape hanging behind these pears. In paint it seemed heavy and severe with the orange and red. I was very tempted to wipe the whole painting. But I made the background lighter, and a little greener, and then lighter again and less green. Now it feels like sunrise and I’m happy with it.

We’re having some remodeling done and they’re putting big windows into the new room today. After many gray days the sun is shining and it’s bright and light and wonderful.
